Philipp Groth (b. 1993, Germany) works across a range of media including film, video, installation, and sculpture. He is based in Chicago.
He is co-founder of the artist initiative "by bye", which stages prototypical interventions in Chicago's urban landscape. Currently, he continues his research as the Director's Office Fellow under Madeleine Grynsztejn at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.
His artistic and curatorial practice is driven by an interest in the conditions under which a work is produced –the institutional framework, the temporary studio, and the exhibition architecture. he no longer differentiates between the site of a work’s origin and the site where it is made public. These inquiries manifest as temporary installations, documentarian photographic and filmic works, and instructional texts—all rooted in a rigorous conceptual formalism.
He received his MA in Documentary Film from the University of the Arts London and his MFA in Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), along his studies as a LeRoy Neiman Fellow at Ox-Bow School of Art. From 2017 to 2020, Groth taught Film at the SRH Berlin University of Applied Sciences.
His work and research have been supported by the Dean Professional Development Award from SAIC, the International Residency at A4 Art Museum Chengdu, the University of the Arts London, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.
