I congratulate the unknown artists of these now-gone works at 435 W Cermak Rd. Contact me if you would like a copy of this publication, the image files, or if you want to talk. Contact: Email studio@philippgroth.com.
This publication negotiates opportunism as generative artistic labor by contextualizing three events1) The loss of my studio in the Cermak Center due to demolition, and the resulting practice that reinterprets artistic production. 2) The semi-legal, provisional exhibition by bye pilsen held in those same spaces weeks before the building was torn down. 3) The bombing of the building by graffiti artists after the close of by bye, who gained access to the structure and took the opportunity to invited friends to collectively cover every floor of the building. This represents the ultimate opportunistic intervention: a total, communal reclamation of a private asset in the narrow window before its erasure. The photographs in this book document the floor-to-ceiling graffiti pieces, captured through a lens that occupies an intermediary position between forensic case study and celebratory trophy shots.
