Philipp Groth is a German artist and filmmaker born at the Franco-German boarder. His filmic works have been shown at institutions such as the Tribeca Film Center New York, Los Angeles Int. Film Festival, Berlin Ind. Film Festival, New York Exp. Film Festival as well as the MCM Tower in Ginza among others. Groth has since expanded his interdisciplinary practice, with focus on moving image and installation, and has exhibited artworks in solo and group exhibitions at Koenig Gallery Tokyo (JAP), Tate Modern London (UK), Koenig Gallery Berlin (GER) and the Goethe Institute Chicago (US). Collaborators of Groth include the David Lynch Foundation,Louis Vuittons Artistic Director Virgil Abloh and FlashArt Magazine. In 2018 Groth took on a lecturer position at the University of Applied Science in Berlin. He currently resides in Chicago and Berlin and is a Master of Fine Arts Candidate and recipient of the 2021 Dean Professional Development Award at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Groth's practice addresses the conditions under which larger economic, cultural, and sexual relationships have tangible effects on the fortunes of individuals. In his view, symbols of power, desire, and pain associated with material culture possess deeper meanings that can be reframed and re-contextualized to describe the friction of self-knowledge and non-recognition. The main areas of his work are moving image, sculpture and installation.
