STATEMENT
Central to this practice is an examination of the conditions under which a work is produced, reflecting an interest in the tension between a mental concept and the reality of a physical place or object (particularly when the former fails to replicate the latter.)
BIO
Philipp Groth (b. 1993) is a German sculptor and installation artist. He was born in Saarbruecken, Germany and currently lives and works in Chicago, IL. There he co-founded the group ‘by bye’, whose installation works in public spaces question the traditional gallery model an museum environment.
Groth received his MA in Documentary Film from The University of the Arts London and his MFA in Fine Arts from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, alongside studies as a LeRoy Neiman Fellow at Ox Bow School of Art and Artists' Residency. From 2017 to 2020, he taught Film at the SRH Berlin University of Applied Sciences in Berlin. Currently, he continues his research as the Director's Office Fellow under Madeleine Grynsztejn at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.
His work and research has been supported by the Dean Professional Development Award from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the International Residency at A4 Art Museum Chengdu, Ox Bow School of Art and Artists' Residency, the University of the Arts London, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.
